A 100 million dollar renovation of the two SCP malls was completed in late 2000. By this time, the first stores in the reconfigured south anchor spot of the renamed SOUTH COAST PLAZA WEST were inline. Moreover, the mall proper had been given a facelift and a 600 foot pedestrian bridge was dedicated in September. The concept of a traffic-free connection between the sibling centers had been proposed since the mid-1980s, although it was originally envisaged as a motorized people mover.
