The lifestyle center, as we know it, came into being in suburban Memphis, Tennessee, under the auspices of the toney THE SHOPS OF SADDLE CREEK.

The lifestyle center was promoted as an upscale, small-scale alternative to the enormous -"impersonal"- shopping mall.

According to its developers, THE SHOPS OF SADDLE CREEK defined this new genre of shopping center with its understated elegance and lush landscaping.
