The concept of a Japanese retail-oriented Roof Garden is not a new one, for the first was built, on the top of Tokyo's Mitsukashi department store, in 1907. Such urban green spaces are now mandated by the government for all major developments; this as a countermeasure to the urban heat island phenomenon.
