August 1959 brought the completion of the first shopping mall in Manitoba. POLO PARK CENTRE, an open-air structure, was located in the western environs of Winnipeg, then the nation's third-largest city.
Shopping centre development had also continued, unabated, in the Alberta province. An open strip plaza, WESTMOUNT SHOPPERS' PARK, had opened, in Edmonton, in August 1955. This was followed by the city's first mall-type venue, BONNIE DOON CENTRE, which was dedicated in August 1960.
